About this place
At TOKYOJUJU, the appeal of yakitori lies not only in the different flavours of each skewer, but also in what they are paired with. Visitors have said that Japanese horseradish brings a refreshing edge to the richness of chicken neck, while chochin has a bold flavour that makes an impression. The menu also lists chicken neck, chicken shoulder with sansho pepper, chicken breast with Japanese horseradish and chochin, inviting diners to choose by both cut and seasoning. Another guest remembered a lightly cooked chicken tenderloin skewer with a hint of smoke, and noted that each cut was grilled differently.
If you are unsure what to order, one place to start is the “Selected 5-Skewer Set” (2,500 yen), which comes with appetisers, salad and a palate cleanser. For more skewers, there is also a “Selected 7-Skewer Set” (3,500 yen), with the same accompaniments. One diner who enjoyed a set course found it satisfying for its combination of skewers, appetisers, tempura and oyakodon, a chicken-and-egg rice bowl, to finish.
Between skewers, try a Gorgonzola-stuffed fried tofu pouch (750 yen) or prawn and avocado tartare (750 yen). One visitor enjoyed the gently sweet blueberry sauce with the stuffed tofu, adding a different flavour to the meal. For dessert, the menu lists fresh warabi mochi (650 yen) and homemade chocolate terrine.
For those who like to pair their food with a drink, a pairing course combines yakitori and drinks; one guest recalled enjoying the skewers with craft beer. The restaurant is also described as suitable for solo dining, so a few skewers and small plates could make a relaxed meal.
